/ Fresh Flowers – nothing makes me smile more than the sight and smell of a bunch of flowers, no matter how small.  They’re not just for your guests to enjoy on the kitchen table – you deserve a bloom or two in your bedroom too!

/ Lighting – instead of an overhead light consider side lights for romantic evening mood lighting.  Or for pure hotel chic go for wall lights either side of the bed, above your bedside tables.

/ Pop!  Keep your palette to one colour – whites or neutrals – and add pops of colour through cushions, lampshades or a brightly coloured rug.

/ Floor it!  Indulge every sense and give your toes a welcome snuggle every morning with a pure wool rug or an indulgently shaggy sheepskin.  The perfect platform from which to start your day.

/ Texture lecture: texture is an important as colour – a pure white room can look subtle, romantic and fresh but be sure to include as many textures as you can: velvet curtains, silk cushions, sheepskin rugs, lace panels, pearl-trimmed mohair throws, cowhides, wooden floor, marble candlesticks, and most importantly flowers!

/ No more Peeping Toms.  Curtains can be tricky – how to block out daylight at night, but keep your privacy during the day?  Consider two pairs, a pretty lace panel for the day to let in the daylight, with a heavier pair (perhaps velvet) for night time.

/ Accessories – Space is precious, so fill it with carefully-chosen things that you use regularly or pieces that make you smile.  Evaluate your accessories every year – it’s easy for them to mount up and become dust-catching clutter.

/ Cushions.  It needn’t be a scene from ‘Along Came Polly’ every night. Use one extra gorgeous cushion to take centre stage between your pillows, or go ‘interior designer’ and place a small cushion in front of each pillow.  If this is to minimal for you then pile them on, but think about texture more than colour; one colour in different textures beats a range of colours in one texture – hands down!

/ Mattress – you’ll spend a third of your life on it, so make it the best you can afford – you owe it to your back!  Take your time choosing and trying, and bear in mind that pocket sprung is better (and will last longer) than open coil.

Luxury Mattresses

/ Bed linen – this actually takes up the most square footage of your bedroom real estate, so make it super gorgeous.  Pure 100% linen makes a real style statement and is an investment buy, and treated well, will get better with age and least decades.
