Using Pattern + Colour at Home.
Using pattern in the home can feel a little risky, as can colour. The worry is that your choice will date too quickly and need a complete overhaul in under 12 months. However, both of these are really important aspects in achieving great home décor, so be brave and be bold!
We are huge fans of geometric shapes and patterns. They have been around for years and never get old, so there is less risk of things going pear shaped. We love Alternative Flooring’s Quirky Tess in Blue, which would make a fantastic rug and central point for a room. Around this we would colour match a couple of items – not too many though – as you don’t want it to look too matchy-matchy! In our SS15 Collection we have some beautiful new ceramic vases due for launch in March. This deep blue pineapple vase is my absolute favourite and picks out the deep colour of the Quirky Tess rug.
Like a geometric pattern, monochrome is also built to last. We would chose an on-trend palm tree print that can be used anywhere in your home, to create a relaxed atmosphere. Black leather dining chairs are one of our absolute best-sellers and have become a stable item for many of our customers. They’re so comfortable and look so stylish. On these we’d pop a couple of sheepskins or cushions – these patterned Fair Trade cushions have been hand dyed in India using indigo dye, which soften the bold geometric pattern of Quirky Tess and add another dimension to the room.
Metallic’s are important to break up blocks of colour. Alternative Flooring’s Metallic Sisal is perfect for floors but think about lighting and accessories. Whether you dot some copper tea lights around the room or hang a beautiful brass framed mirror on the wall, reflections will bounce all around the room to create soft twinkling light. We would always advise to use wall lights and lamps wherever possible, but over a dining space it is essential to make use of a pendant light. But make this a statement piece and fit it on a dimmer switch. Our new black and white layered pendant light arriving in March is a contemporary design so will give your room an up-to-date feel.
SS15 Trend: Watch out for Cactus and Faux Botanic Plants – they are going to be huge this summer!
