What is the border of a rug called?

When we say border, we mean a binding fabric or tape. It is a material which is added to the edges of a rug so that your rug doesn't unravel. As well as securing the edges of your made to measure rug or runner, our borders can be paired with any flooring of your choice for a personalised touch. Whether it is a grey herringbone rug or a black border rug, the options are almost endless.

Can you add a border to a rug?

Adding a border or binding tape is a service we offer. We offer over a hundred different tapes which can be paired with our floor coverings. These are available as a 'single' or 'double' border dependant on the floor covering used.

Your floor covering can also be edged in a whipping colour which either complements the floor covering to give a plain and simple look - we call this self-coloured whipped edging. Alternatively, you can select our Dolly Mixtures whipped edges to give a shot of colour.

What types of rugs can you add borders to?

Alternative allows you to mix, match, measure and make. This means that you can pair just about any natural carpet option we have available with one of our fabric borders. If you are looking for inspiration, play with our easy to use  Make Me A Rug online designer to see the combinations available to you.

Sisal rugs with borders are a perfect way to create a modern touch to any room. Jute rugs with borders are also great way to add personality to your room. Combine natural hues with patterned borders for pops of colour and interest.

It’s your rug and your rules, so get creative now.

What is a whipped rug border?

A whipped rug border is a process also known as overlocking or binding. This overlocking of thread can be in a complementing colour, self-coloured whipping,  or can be in a contrasting colour which we call Dolly Mixtures. The overlocking prevents the cut floor covering from fraying and gives a carpet the perfect finished edge.
