What is a sisal rug?

Sisal fibres are a renewable material that is extracted from the leaves of the Agave Sisalana plant. It’s native to Southern Mexico but also cultivated and naturalised in many African and south American countries. Sisal fibres are made by hand-harvesting the sisal leaves, then crushing, beating and brushing them away by a rotating wheel that helps produce long white strands. These beautiful white strands are then dried in the sun, cleaned, combed and graded. The sisal cords are then dyed, before being woven into stunning sisal rugs.

Are sisal rugs durable?

Sisal fibre is incredibly strong, hardy and versatile. Traditionally, it was used to make rope and twine, which is why a sisal rug is most certainly hardwearing and a great flooring choice for living rooms, hallways and stairs. A latex-backed sisal rug is one of the most hardwearing of our natural plant fibre rugs.

Can you vacuum sisal rugs?

Yes of course. Regular vacuuming of your rug with a strong suction-only vacuum cleaner is all that’s needed for the maintenance of your sisal rug. The strong suction will be enough to pull up any of the fine dirt that may have accumulated without causing damage to the weave of fibres.

How to clean a sisal rug

When it comes to sisal rugs, they don’t like to get wet. Even water can potentially leave a mark. Our sisal rugs, can have Intec, our environmentally friendly stain inhibitor applied on request. This helps to reduce the impact of a spill, but time is of the essence and you will still need to treat the area. Our Natural Flooring Care Kits are WoolSafe approved, which means they are safe to use on delicate natural fibre floor coverings to ensure the best method of care.  If you have a query or need details for a professional cleaner, speak to an expert at WoolSafe now.

Can sisal rugs get wet?

Being a plant based fibre, sisal as a material is naturally absorbant, as therefore even water can potentially leave a mark. That’s why we wouldn’t recommend this material for bathrooms or basements. Any spills that occur should be blotted up as soon as possible to avoid being absorbed and leaving a mark. Speed is of the essence when this occurs.
